Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

Lately the PLAN has been operating off the coast of Somolia and the pirates have attacked attacked supply ships on at least two occasions (with hilarious results) so at the present and for the near...

You realize a gyro-stabilized platform with optical fire control is VASTLY superior to the crew served version of the same weapon for not much additional cost.

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

The superior part  I was aware of, the cost I assumed was much greater than a manual open mount. For popping pirates I wouldn't have thought stabilization was a really big deal; when it comes down to...

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

Sometimes there are hostages, prisoners etcetera. A remote controlled weapon system means that they have some chance of picking which part of the pirate boat they blow to bits. But if that is so, they...

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

None of the Italian systems that has been implemented uses onboard directors either. And neither does RAM for that matter.

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

Given closed loop tracking why should off mount not be capable?

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

Because there is the tendency to make off-mount sensors more capable, which makes them more expensive. This leads to fitting fewer sensors than you have weapons mounts (with one sensor providing...

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

Understand that, off mount will probably be more expensive and tempt you to over specify, but that doesn't mean these weapons can't have off mount directors. After all, they were all the rage when...

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

Ah, but when effective radar/electro-optical directors were first introduced the were all large and heavy, and thus had to be "off-mount". Note that the STAAG mount was developed near the end of WW2....

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

Who's to say the Chinese haven't made the same decisions as the Italians. My point being, no on mount radar doesn't have to mean not radar directed. Just as an aside, integrated on mount systems mean...

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

The point of on-mount radar is not necessarily that it's dedicated to a given gun. The point is to make the fire control radar and weapon a modular package. And, for whatever reason, it has led to US...

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

The Sov navy being a big user of SSMs and with no carrier fighters it's hardly surprising that they fitted plenty of CIWS. The RN sending ships to the Falklands with stacks of Exocet and no CIWS...

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

It uses the regular mounts. Each new mount has its own console panel and best of all unlike the old guns they are not swapped out between ships when they deploy.

Re: [china] what is that new cannon? a new CIWS?

I remember the ship-fitters going crazy installing Mk38 mountings on ships we did work on during Desert Shield, my shop had to inspect the mount to deck welds when they were done.
